چکیده

The aim of the research described in this paperwas to ascertain whether or not there are differences in intelligibility between male and female voices under noise conditions which are spectrally in agreement with everyday speech maskers. An experiment was carried out in which the CVC and phoneme intelligibility of ten male and female voices was measured. The listeners also gave their opinion on a number of scales per speaker, including intelligibility. The results of the CVC intelligibility test indicate that no differences exist between male and female speakers as a group, whereas clear differences are found within the groups. The results of the subjectively scored intelligibility correlate fairly weil with the results of the CVC intelligibility test.

The Relative Intelligibility of Male and Female Speakers: in Search of a Method

A number of professions in the service industries like telephonist, receptionist or announcer at the railway station can be observed to be typically occupied by women. Intelligibility is of crucial importance in these professions. The main task of people in the service industries is to inform the public and sometimes there is a lot of noise which troubles the messages. Are women preferred in th...

An algorithm to increase intelligibility for hearing-impaired listeners in the presence of a competing talker.

Individuals with hearing impairment have particular difficulty perceptually segregating concurrent voices and understanding a talker in the presence of a competing voice. In contrast, individuals with normal hearing perform this task quite well. This listening situation represents a very different problem for both the human and machine listener, when compared to perceiving speech in other types...

Evaluating speech intelligibility enhancement for HMM-based synthetic speech in noise

It is possible to increase the intelligibility of speech in noise by enhancing the clean speech signal. In this paper we demonstrate the effects of modifying the spectral envelope of synthetic speech according to the environmental noise. To achieve this, we modify Mel cepstral coefficients according to an intelligibility measure that accounts for glimpses of speech in noise: the Glimpse Proport...

Synthesis and perception of breathy, normal, and Lombard speech in the presence of noise

This papers studies the synthesis of speech over a wide vocal effort continuum and its perception in the presence of noise. Three types of speech are recorded and studied along the continuum: breathy, normal, and Lombard speech. Corresponding synthetic voices are created by training and adapting the statistical parametric speech synthesis system GlottHMM. Natural and synthetic speech along the ...

Modelling speaker intelligibility in noise

This study compared listeners’ performance on a multispeaker speech-in-noise task with that of a model inspired by automatic speech recognition techniques. Listeners identified three keywords in simple 6-word sentences presented in speech-shaped noise at a range of signal-to-noise ratios. Sentence material was provided by 18 male or 16 female speakers. An across-speaker analysis of a number of ...
